She is an art teacher at Chilton High School who is using the summer to go on a book tour for her middle grade mystery set on the shore of Lake Winnebago and features original illustrations.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A forgotten diary, a creepy neighbor, and rumors of a missing girl. What secrets are hiding in the house on Hemlock Hill?

Twelve-year-old Alyssa isn’t happy when she and her family move from Chicago to a neglected farmhouse on Lake Winnebago. While exploring their new home, Alyssa finds a hidden diary written by a girl who lived in the house in the 1950s. She’s eager to figure out who wrote the diary and why it was hidden—maybe Wisconsin won’t be so boring.

While reading about farm life in the diary, Alyssa navigates her own new rural life. She struggles to fit in at school, her mysterious elderly neighbor seems to watch her every move, and she hears rumors about a girl who went missing decades ago from the house on Hemlock Hill.

The diary entries soon take a dark turn when the girl’s friendship with a questionable classmate falls apart and troubles with her father begin. Then the entries suddenly stop. Alyssa searches for answers and finds herself in the middle of a seventy-year-old unsolved mystery.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Brittni Nelson is a middle-school art teacher in Wisconsin. She and her family live in a one-hundred-year-old farmhouse that overlooks Lake Winnebago, which inspired The House on Hemlock Hill. When Brittni isn’t busy teaching or driving her children around, she loves to read, travel, and go to the theater. Brittni has illustrated and self-published two books: Grammy’s Quilts and Papa’s Cottage. She has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a master’s degree in teacher leadership.

Annette is a former nomad and owner of Beautiful Strength, a nonprofit born out of the need for people to accept their bodies, to love ourselves for who we are, and to celebrate our diversity. Portrait stories have included topics like HIV, Black Lives Matter, Cancer Survival, Autism, Diversity, and Body Positivity.

Taking a break from traveling as a nomad in her Beautiful Strengths Bus (where she drove around the country capturing photos of people in each state), she began substitute teaching in Iowa and wound up helping an entire class publish a book—naturally, in their own words, with their own drawings.

Annette takes that story and brings it to Oshkosh in an event on Sunday, Aug. 30!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Atticus Goes is a joyful children’s book inspired by the real-life adventure of a big pink bus with an even bigger heart.

Once a hardworking school bus, Atticus thinks his journey is over until he meets Miss Annette, a photographer with a dream of turning a bus into a mobile photo studio. Together, they begin a brand-new adventure filled with creativity, kindness, teamwork, and lots of new friends.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Annette McNamara is a Nashville-based freelance photographer, speaker, and the founder of Beautiful Strength, a social movement and ongoing portrait project. She travels across North America in a converted 40-foot school bus named "Atticus," which she turned into a mobile photo studio to capture unfiltered portraits and stories of human resilience.

Growing up, Annette struggled with her own self-image and body confidence. After spending years trying to change how she looked, she realized true worth comes from within.

She works as a keynote speaker for organizations, universities, and corporate events, sharing messages on vulnerability, inclusion, and self-acceptance.

Hosted by Oshkosh Poet Laureate, Thomas Cannon, this group was originally held at NAMI Oshkosh. Because we want to continue supporting this wonderful organization that promotes mental health and well-being for the community, we will be taking donations, which are much appreciated but never required.

Poets will gather around the campfire in the backyard of Author Apothecary & Bookstore. There will be chairs and two cement benches for seating.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Fire has long been a place where people have gathered to tell stories, share wisdom, and keep one another company through the darkness. In this space, we honor that tradition by offering our poems to the circle. Each participant is invited to share one or two poems, depending on the size of the group.

After each reading, the poet may choose what they need from the circle: quiet witnessing, general reflections, or thoughtful constructive feedback. There is no expectation to critique unless it is welcomed.

Like tending a campfire, our role is to care for our words. Sometimes that means simply holding space. Sometimes it means offering another log—an encouraging thought, a fresh perspective, or gentle insight—to help the poem continue to grow. Together, we practice listening with respect, speaking with kindness, and honoring the courage it takes to place our words into the light.

Alice is a poet, artist, and community builder who believes stories have the power to help us understand ourselves and one another. Through gatherings centered on poetry, film, and shared human experience, she hopes to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and welcomed exactly as they are. HOW DOES THIS WRITING GROUP WORK?

This writing group is a little different from others you may be used to. We are looking for writers who want to focus on any current writing projects or those we are struggling to get through. Our lives are busy, so this is a great time to work on that project you’ve pushed to the side for too long or a project that you’re stuck on and need focused time to work through it.

WHO CAN JOIN?

All experience levels are welcome—just bring a project you are working on. If you forget your project or just want to wing it, we will have two writing prompts available each meeting.

HOW DO WE STAY FOCUSED?

We will be following the Pomodoro Technique, which is 20 minutes of writing and 5 minutes break. If there's time, we will open it up to sharing and gather feedback on our work.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Carol L. Paur is a Wisconsin author, speaker, writing mentor and advocate whose love of storytelling began when she was young. She holds an MA in Communication and has worked as a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines, written and produced children’s plays, and worked as a screenwriter. Her books span several genres, including middle-grade mystery and fantasy and young adult mystery. She is the author of Rowley Peters and the Lumberjack Ghost, Early Summer, and Isasnora Snores, among other works. Carol is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Wisconsin Writers Association, and Sisters in Crime.

Carol is also a passionate advocate for people with cleft lips and palates, having been born with a cleft palate herself. Her personal experience helped inspire Rowley Peters, a young heroine with a cleft palate who learns to advocate for herself while navigating friendship, mystery and adventure. When she isn't writing, Carol enjoys photography, spending time with her husband and daughters, and keeping up with her dogs.

Bryn’s Bio

Bryn (they/them) is the owner, deathwalker & death companion behind Silver Glass Deathcare. They are a queer, nonbinary human with passions for books, music, nature, nerdom & a good cup of tea. They live in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with their partners and their gaggle of dogs and cats.

After their father’s unexpected death when they were 19, Bryn developed a special interest in deathcare, funeral services, and grief work. They saw a culture that doesn’t know how to handle (or talk) about death, and sometimes a deep fear of mortality. Through education, open dialogue, community outreach, and hands-on care, they hope to destigmatize end-of-life conversations, return a sense of sacredness to the dying process, and contribute to a more death-aware Wisconsin and world.

Bryn has spent 6 years studying with death educators like Erin Merelli, Kacie Gikonyo, La Mort, & the Deathwives, and numerous hours of self-study and reading on the subject of deathcare. They specialize in helping clients who are LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse, non-Christian or nonreligious, pagan, and polyamorous.

Bryn’s approach to life and death is to leave the world better than they found it.

This memoir chronicles the author’s journey to stepping into their dream of becoming a published writer. She started writing a novel and this book presented itself as a parallel story. Setbacks, depression, anxiety, and fear, and how each affects everyday life. It took a trip back to the beginning for her to piece together an understanding of why she does some of the things she does. Conway hopes that her story will open up the conversation about mental illness and show people living with mental illness that they are not alone. She also seeks to impart to those who love someone with mental illness some understanding or awareness.

Making Russian Dolls is her historical fiction debut that covers Russian intelligence and athletes who have one goal: Domination.

As a girl, Maya Orlova dreamed of working for Cheka-Russia's secret police and intelligence service. Physically, she was considered unsuitable for government service. However, she possessed a special gift that earned her a place in the Russian government... and immersed in espionage.

Dmitry Kurchin's love of sports and duty to country were the perfect combination. Traveling throughout Europe, with an entourage of Russian athletes and agents, he carefully developed intricate intelligence networks.

Sarah Anderson’s Bio

Sarah Anderson is a fifth-generation Oshkosh resident with deep roots in the community. She has worked at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh since 1999 (minus a ten-year maternity leave) and has served as Bursar since 2022. Beyond her work at UWO, Sarah has been actively involved in the local arts community, singing with area choirs and serving as president of the Oshkosh Choraliers for more than a decade. Through her leadership and community involvement, she enjoys bringing people together and creating welcoming spaces for connection.

As she enters a new chapter in life with her son beginning college this fall at UWO, Sarah is excited to become more involved in the continued growth of the Main Street corridor and the Oshkosh community. Her reading interests are wonderfully eclectic, ranging from current events and celebrity memoirs to local history and women’s history, and she looks forward to connecting with fellow readers and discovering new stories.
